National Car Care Month – How to look after your Tyres
You know that tyres can be expensive to replace, but do you know how to look after them properly to help them last longer? Take the opportunity this National Car Care month to follow our tops tips to long lasting tyres!
Take it Slow
Driving fast, making sudden stops etc. is going to be harder on your tyres and increases the chance of damage. Rushing also causes drivers to make mistakes such driving into kerbs or not seeing a pothole in time. This can all add up to serious damage, so learn to take your time.
Make regular checks
Not all checks should wait for a service. Did you know you should be checking your tyre pressure regularly and your tyre tread at least once a month? Making this a habit will help you to identify problems before they happen and will ensure that your car is safe enough to drive. Under-inflated tyres can make you three times more likely have a traffic accident, which can be costly in more ways than one.
Ensure even wear
To ensure even wear and safe driving you need to make sure your tyres are properly aligned. If you find your car is drifting to the right or left, then you need to get your alignment checked. Similarly, you should be rotating your tyres regularly as they carry uneven weight, and therefore will wear unevenly. If you’re unsure of how often to do this, check out your car owner’s manual. Otherwise, a guideline of every 6,000-8,000 miles is a good rule to stick to.
Know when to call it quits
Yes, replacing your tyres is expensive but don’t risk your safety to save a few quid. This is something that you should budget for if you want to keep your car in good condition. The minimum legal tread depth is 1.5 mm across the width of the tread and the bars will be flush with the surface of the tread when reaching this point. However, most car manufacturers recommend you replace them well before this happens. It’s important to know when it’s time to replace your tyres, but if you’re unsure get some advice from a mechanic.
