SERE backed athletes to represent TeamNI at 2018 Commonwealth Games
SERE brand ambassadors Ciara Mageean, Xeno Young and James Edgar head down under this spring to compete in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
A strong line-up of 88 local athletes have been announced as the team to represent Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Australia this year.
Amongst the TeamNI squad is SERE brand ambassadors Ciara Mageean, Xeno Young and James Edgar, who will be competing in athletics, cycling and triathlon respectively.
Australia’s Gold Coast will host the Games this year from April 4-15 and will see the NI squad compete in 13 sports including athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, lawn bowls, netball, shooting, table tennis, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
This is the first Commonwealth Games for cyclist Xeno and triathlete James and the second Games for Portaferry runner Ciara, who also competed in the 1,500m event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Ciara who missed the 2014 Games in Glasgow due to a persistent ankle injury, has proved this a minor setback and has since went on to win the 1,500m bronze medal at the 2016 European Athletics Championships, as well as representing Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Ciara, Xeno and James have all displayed a tremendous amount of hard-work and dedication in their sporting disciplines, and on behalf of everyone at SERE we wish them and all of TeamNI the very best of luck at the Games this April.
