Big, spacious and capable on slippery ground. Plug-in hybrids aren’t supposed to be these things, but the Outlander PHEV is. It’s a family-sized SUV powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine with twin electric motors, capable of running on electric power alone for around 28-miles before using a sip of petrol. There are driver-selectable hybrid modes for economy, performance or both, and 4WD comes as standard with super-all wheel control to optimise traction on any ground. Class-leading WLTP combined fuel consumption of 139.7mpg proves the Outlander PHEV’s low running costs, and there’re 8 trim levels to choose from. Features like an electric heater to warm your Outlander when the engine is cold, a 360° camera, blind spot warning and powered tailgate are available as standard.
The Outlander PHEV is perfectly proportioned. It’s just at home in the city as it is the country. LED headlights are a standard feature on Exceed models, together with premium diamond quilted leather seats for sheer luxury.
The 2.4L petrol engine, lithium-ion battery and electric motors work together seamlessly to deliver a refined and smooth drive. In EV mode, you can travel for up to 28-miles at speeds of up to 83mph or up to 35-miles in the city.
There’s a braked tow capacity of 2,000kg and the boot is enormous with a 462-litre load volume. 4H models upwards have a powered tailgate and an electric heater. If you have younger children, there are ISOFIX points on both rear outer seats.
Living with it
Thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you can run your favourite apps on the 8” touchscreen. Keyless entry and an electric parking brake are equipped as standard. Dynamic models add blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert.
