A plug-in hybrid vehicle is also called a PHEV. This is a combination of a battery powered and a fuel powered engine. These cars will usually use the full electric charge before switching to fuel, improving efficiency & reducing running costs. Regenerative braking is also used as an energy recovery system that can help charge the battery while the car is slowing down. The extra power provided by the electric motor may allow for a smaller combustion engine. The battery can also power auxiliary loads and reduce engine idling when the vehicle is stopped. Together, these features result in better fuel economy without sacrificing the performance of a car.
