Check Your Tyres

Tyres are your first line of defence once the roads turn wet. Check tread depth first. The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm, but for wet-weather grip it's worth aiming higher than that. Check pressures too, since temperature drops can affect them, and take a look at the spare while you're at it. Uneven wear across a tyre usually points to an alignment issue worth getting looked at.

Test Your Lights

Walk around the car with the lights on and check headlights, brake lights, indicators and fog lights are all working. Fog is common in rural parts of Northern Ireland once autumn sets in, and with darkness falling earlier, other drivers need to see you clearly just as much as you need to see the road.

Top Up Your Fluids

Screenwash gets used far more often once leaves, mud and road grime start building up, so top up with a mix rated for colder temperatures. Coolant, brake fluid and engine oil are worth checking too. Low or dirty fluid affects performance, and low coolant in particular can lead to more serious engine damage as temperatures drop.

Inspect Your Wipers

Streaking, skipping or unusual noise are all signs your wiper blades need replacing. Good visibility isn't optional on wet autumn roads, so don't leave this one until the first proper downpour. If your car has a rear wiper, it's worth checking too, especially if you're regularly driving in busy traffic or parking in tight spots.

Check Your Battery

Cold, damp mornings are when a weak battery finally gives up. If your car has been slow to start, struggled with electrics, or the battery is more than a few years old, it's worth getting it tested before it fails rather than after. A flat battery on a dark, wet morning is more than an inconvenience, it can be genuinely unsafe if it happens somewhere awkward.

Give It a Proper Clean

Leaves, mud and road salt can sit on paintwork and cause real damage if they're left there, and a clean windscreen and mirrors make a genuine difference to visibility. While you're cleaning up, take a look for any scuffs, scratches or stone chips picked up over summer. Small marks are far easier to sort before winter grit and salt get involved.
