E10 Petrol has arrived in Northern Ireland and SERE Motors are going to explain how it will affect you!

On Tuesday 1^st November 2022, individuals driving across Northern Ireland will have noticed that normal standard petrol has been upgraded to E10 petrol. This type of petrol contains 10% renewable ethanol and has been brought into Northern Ireland to reduce the cardon dioxide (CO2) emissions and tackle climate change.

When going to the petrol station to fill up your car you may see that some garages will offer two grades of petrol, one being the original E5 (97+ octane) and the brand-new E10 (95 octane.) This new introduction will only apply to petrol vehicles as diesel fuel will not be changing.

Whilst 95% of the vehicles on the road in Northern Ireland will be compatible with E10 petrol, motorists are being advised to make sure that their car is able to use the fuel by visiting this “Compatibility checker tool."

Some of the following vehicles may not be compatible with E10 petrol:

Classic cars
Some models from the first years of the 21^st century
Most mopeds, especially the ones with an engine size the same as or small than 50cc.

The government stated that, “The introduction of E10 petrol will help to decarbonise transport across Northern Ireland and potentially cut CO2 emissions by around 750,000 tonnes a year.” That is the equivalent of 350,000 cars being taken off the road! 👀

Another massive benefit of the rollout of E10 petrol in Northern Ireland is that it will support thousands of jobs across the country due to the supply chain and the implementation of getting the fuel type available for consumers.

Now for the question that you all wanted to know the answer to, will the change to E10 petrol affect my fuel bills compared to E5? The answer is yes, but in a positive way! The price of E10 petrol is currently sitting at 166p/litre which cheaper compared to the 166.4p/litre for the standard E5 petrol. The only negative for E10 petrol compared to E5 according to the government in Northern Ireland is that the fuel is 1% less fuel-efficient which basically means that motorists will have to fill up their vehicle more often.
