Electric Vehicle Battery Health Explained

If you’re considering buying an electric vehicle (EV), one of the most important questions you should ask is: how healthy is the battery? Unlike petrol and diesel cars, where engine wear and service history give you a rough idea of condition, an EV’s battery is the single most critical component. Its health directly affects driving range, charging performance, and long-term reliability.

At SERE Motors, we understand that investing in an EV can feel daunting, which is why we can provide Battery Health Checks on our newer electric vehicles and can arrange one by request for others*. It’s our way of giving buyers clear, reliable insights into a car’s battery condition before purchase, so you can invest with confidence.

A Battery Health Check measures an electric vehicle’s battery condition and performance. It assesses factors like State of Health, voltage consistency, and system safety to provide an accurate picture of how the battery is performing.

Battery health directly impacts driving range, charging performance, and long-term reliability. Understanding its condition helps protect your investment and ensures you know exactly what to expect.

Yes. By analysing battery capacity and condition, we can estimate both the official WLTP range and the realistic everyday range you can expect from your vehicle.

The check reviews key data such as battery age, mileage, cell performance, charging capacity, and the accuracy of the battery management system. It also identifies any safety issues or irregularities.

Battery Health Checks are carried out on all our newer electric stock and can be arranged by request for other vehicles. These reports can be found in the images of our used car stock. Speak to our team to find out more about a specific model.

What Is a Battery Health Check?

A Battery Health Check is an advanced diagnostic process designed specifically for electric vehicles. It evaluates the battery’s State of Health (SoH), which measures how much of the original battery capacity remains. The SoH is expressed as a percentage, showing how much energy the battery can currently store compared to when it was brand new.

Unlike a basic voltage reading, a full health check looks at multiple factors, including mileage, vehicle age, voltage differences between individual cells, energy counters, and data from the vehicle’s battery management system (BMS). The result is a reliable overview of the battery’s current condition, helping you understand how it performs today and what range you can realistically expect.

Safety and Reliability Checks

Battery health isn’t just about range, safety is a huge part of it. The Battery Health Check includes a series of reliability tests that assess the performance of the battery management system, sensors, and individual cells. It confirms that all systems are functioning correctly and that the readings being reported are accurate.

If any issues are detected, they’ll be clearly highlighted from minor performance variations to potential safety concerns. This gives buyers peace of mind that every EV we sell has been properly assessed, ensuring you’re not taking unnecessary risks.

Energy and Range Insights

A Battery Health Check also provides a detailed breakdown of a vehicle’s energy and range capabilities. It distinguishes between three key energy metrics:

  • Gross Energy: The total theoretical energy physically stored in the battery. This represents the absolute maximum, though not all of it is usable.
  • Net (Nominal) Energy: The energy available after internal buffers and losses, effectively the amount usable from a full charge to empty.
  • Usable Energy: The portion of energy that’s actually available to the driver, factoring in reserve capacity that ensures the car can still reach a charger when it appears empty.

From these figures, technicians can estimate both the official WLTP range and a realistic day-to-day range based on real-world usage. This helps buyers understand exactly what kind of performance to expect in everyday driving.
