What to do if a cars service history is missing

If you’ve been browsing for a used car you’ve probably seen the phrase “Full Service History” (or FSH) pop up time and time again. For some people, it’s just another box to tick. For others, it’s a make-or-break detail that can determine whether a car is even worth test driving. But what actually is a service history, and why is it such a big deal when buying or selling a car?

At SERE Motors, we sell hundreds of new and used vehicles across our Belfast and Lisburn dealerships each year and trust us - it matters. Let’s break down what service history means, why it’s important, and what your options are if you’re looking at a car that doesn’t have one.

What is a Service History?

In simple terms, a service history is a record of all the maintenance and servicing work that’s been carried out on a car during its lifetime. It shows when the car was serviced, what was done, and where the work took place. This can be recorded in a traditional service booklet (you’ll recognise it by all the little dealer stamps and scribbles), or in a digital format, particularly with newer cars.

A Full Service History (FSH) means the car has had every recommended service carried out on time, as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. That includes things like oil changes, brake checks, fluid top-ups, and other scheduled maintenance.

There’s also such a thing as Main Dealer Service History, which means the car has been serviced exclusively at official, brand-approved garages—like SERE Motors, for SEAT and KGM (and Renault, FIAT, SsangYong, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi and MG). This can add even more value and reassurance for buyers, as it means all work was completed by trained technicians using approved parts.

On the flip side, if services have been missed, done late, or if there are gaps in the records, the car may only have a partial service history, or none at all.

Why does a full service history matter?

A well-documented service history can offer a lot of peace of mind when you’re looking to buy a used car. Here's why:

It proves the car’s been looked after

Servicing isn’t just a tick-box exercise. It’s how you make sure your car stays reliable, efficient, and safe. A vehicle with a full history tells you that previous owners didn’t just drive it—they cared for it properly.

It helps spot potential issues early

Regular servicing helps catch problems before they become costly repairs. If a car hasn’t been looked after, you’re more likely to end up with unexpected bills—or worse, a breakdown.

It boosts resale value

When it comes time to sell or part-exchange your vehicle, a full service history can help you get more money. It’s something most buyers look for, and many are happy to pay a little extra for that added reassurance.

It’s a sign of trust

When a seller can provide a full service history, it shows they’re being transparent about the vehicle’s condition. It builds confidence and trust—two very important things when handing over thousands of pounds for a car.

What If the Car Doesn’t Have a Service History?

Not all used cars come with a neat folder of paperwork or a digitally up-to-date logbook. Sometimes, the paperwork is lost. Sometimes, the servicing wasn’t done properly. And sometimes… well, it just wasn’t done at all.

But that doesn’t always mean the car’s a write-off. If you’re interested in a vehicle that doesn’t have a full service history, here’s what to do:

1. Ask questions

Why isn’t there a record? Did the owner service it themselves? Was the logbook lost? A bit of background can help you judge whether it’s a genuine oversight or something to be wary of.

2. Look for other records

Even if the service book is missing, receipts, MOT certificates and garage invoices can help rebuild the car’s maintenance timeline. It’s not perfect, but it’s something.

3. Get an independent check

If you’re unsure, have the car inspected by a mechanic you trust. A trained eye can spot whether a car’s been neglected or is still in good shape underneath.

4. Start your own service history

If you do decide to buy, make it your mission to get the car serviced immediately—and keep the paperwork! From that point on, you're building a new, trustworthy record that can help later down the line.

How Do You Keep a Full Service History?

If you want your car to retain its value and stay in the best condition possible, keeping a full service history is easy—as long as you're consistent.

  • Follow the service intervals recommended by the manufacturer. These are usually time- or mileage-based (e.g., every 12 months or 10,000 miles).
  • Use a franchise-approved service centre where possible (like SERE Motors in Belfast or Lisburn), especially for newer or premium models.
  • Keep the receipts and stamped service book, or make sure your garage updates the digital records.

Buying a used car with an FSH? Great - make sure to keep it going. It’s an asset, so don’t let it slide.
