How To book Your MOT

Booking your MOT can feel like a hassle, but with the right information, it doesn't have to be. Here’s everything you need to know about booking, rescheduling, or cancelling your MOT, plus the latest updates on Temporary Exemption Certificates (TECs). 

Booking Your MOT

You can book your MOT or vehicle test online through the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) website. If you prefer to book over the phone, you can call the DVA booking line. Keep in mind that booking early is essential, as there is currently high demand for MOT slots. 

If you’re struggling to get an appointment before your MOT expires, don’t panic. The PSNI has agreed not to penalise drivers who can prove they’ve booked the earliest available slot, as long as the vehicle is roadworthy, insured, and doesn’t have a SORN declaration. 

Temporary Exemption Certificates (TECs)

From the 1st of June 2025, private cars that were first registered between the following dates will automatically receive a Temporary Exemption Certificate (TEC), allowing you to legally drive for another 12 months without a new MOT: 

• 1st June 2017 – 31st May 2018 (until 31st May 2025) 

• 1st June 2018 – 31st May 2019 

• 1st June 2019 – 31st May 2020 (until 31st May 2025) 

• 1st June 2020 – 31st May 2021 

If your car was registered in these periods and still has a valid MOT, you don’t need to do anything - TECs are automatically applied. However, if your MOT has expired or the vehicle was last tested outside Northern Ireland, you won’t receive a TEC and should book a test.
