How to check your engine oil

Checking your oil might not sound glamorous, but it’s one of the easiest and most important things you can do to keep your engine healthy – especially before a long drive or road trip. If your oil is low or dirty, it can lead to engine wear, overheating, or even a full-blown breakdown. Here’s how to do it yourself in just a few minutes. 

1. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes to let everything cool. Your car should be parked on flat ground. 
2. Pop the bonnet and locate the dipstick – it usually has a bright yellow or orange handle. 
3. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean with your cloth or towel. 
4. Reinsert it fully, then pull it out again to check the level. 
5. Look for the MIN and MAX markers (or L and H). The oil should sit between these two. If it’s below the minimum line, it’s time to top up. If you overfill or it’s overfilled to begin with, you’ll need to drain it – but don’t worry, we can help there! 
6. Check the condition too – clean oil is amber or golden. If it’s dark, gritty, or smells burnt, book in for an oil change.
