Being prepared for a long car journey can make the difference between an adventure you’ll remember forever and a disaster you’ll never forget. It doesn’t matter if you’re hitting the road for a family holiday, a cheeky weekend getaway, or just a long drive, we’re here to help you survive and enjoy the ride!

1. Preparing Your Car for the Journey

Before you even think about your on-the-road snacks, you need to make sure your car is road trip ready...

  • Check Your Tyres: Ensure they’re inflated to the correct pressure and that the tread is sufficient. If you have a spare tyre or puncture kit, give them a wee check over to make sure you have everything you need, and they are in a good condition.
  • Fluid Levels: Top up your oil, coolant, and washer fluid if needed. It’s also wise to carry some extra just in case!
  • Brakes: If you’re not confident about checking them yourself, have a mechanic give them a once-over, give us a call 📞
  • Lights and Indicators: Make sure all lights are working properly. Consider carrying spare bulbs, especially if you’ll be driving at night in prolonged darkness!
  • Emergency Kit: Stock your car with essentials like a first aid kit, warning triangle, high-visibility vest, and a basic toolkit. You never know when you might need them, and is it not always better to be prepared?

2. What to Bring

The good thing about travelling by car is there are no restrictions on what you can bring!

  • Snacks and Drinks: Keep a mix of healthy snacks and treats within arm’s reach – sweeties, fruit, sarnies, you choose! Don’t forget plenty of water to stay hydrated or plan your breaks at rest stops!
  • Entertainment: Load up on podcasts, audiobooks, and music playlists. Your passengers might even want to download a few episodes of your favourite series to watch – and you can join in during breaks.
  • Navigation Tools: Even if you’ve got a sat-nav, it’s always good to have a backup, like an old school map or a pre-downloaded map on your phone (you can do this on Apple, Android, and Google maps).
  • Blankets and Pillows: For naps in the backseat or just added comfort, these are a must.
  • Power Bank and Chargers: Keep your devices charged with car chargers or portable power banks. You don’t want to run out of juice mid-journey!

3. Dress for Comfort

When it comes to a long drive, comfort is key. Here’s what to consider wearing:

  • Loose, Breathable Clothing: We recommend avoiding anything tight or restrictive, but there are no rules when it comes to fashion, so you should wear anything that is comfortable for you!
  • Layer Up: Temperatures can vary significantly from start to finish. Bring a hoodie or light jacket you can easily take off or put on as needed.
  • Comfortable Footwear: You might be tempted to wear sandals or flip-flops, but they’re not the best for driving. Wear comfortable, flat shoes that give you good control of the pedals. Passengers could even bring their slippers!
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from glare and reduce strain, especially if you’ll be driving in sunny conditions. Also, you will look cool. Like Tom Cruise in Top Gun vibes.

4. Games to Play on the Road

Whether you’re travelling with kids or simply enjoy some car friendly games, these classic games and activities will help to pass the time!

  • I Spy: A timeless favourite that’s easy for all ages. One person picks something they can see, and everyone else must guess what it is... “I spy with my little eye, something beginning with....”
  • 20 Questions: Someone thinks of an object, and the others have 20 yes-or-no questions to figure out what it is.
  • Road Trip Bingo: Create bingo cards with things you’re likely to see on the road—cows, police cars, bridges, etc. First one to get bingo wins!
  • Story Chain: One person starts a story with a single sentence, and each person adds to it in turn. It can get as silly or creative as you like.

5. Plan Your Pit Stops

Regular breaks are vital for staying alert and reducing tiredness... and it’s always good to get out and stretch your legs:

  • Stretch and Walk: Get out of the car and stretch your legs - a quick walk can do wonders for your energy levels, and you’ll generally just feel a bit fresher.
  • Scenic Stops: If time allows, plan your route to include interesting stops along the way! Northern Ireland’s beauty is unmatched... use some time to admire and appreciate our home.
  • Fuel Up: Both your car and your body need regular fuel. Use pit stops to grab a coffee, fill up on fuel (or electric!), and recharge yourself!

6. Stay Safe

Safety should always be your top priority on a long journey:

  • Avoid Distractions: Keep your focus on the road. If you’re using your phone for navigation, use a hands-free mount!
  • Switch Drivers: If possible, share the driving responsibilities to avoid driving whilst tired. If you’re the sole driver, take breaks every couple of hours.
  • Know Your Limits: Don’t push yourself to drive longer than you’re comfortable with. It’s better to arrive a bit later than to take unnecessary risks.
