Inspire Inclusion this International Women's Day 💜

As we celebrate International Women's Day and Women's History Month, it's essential to recognise the remarkable achievements of women who have left a lasting mark on the motoring world. From engineering breakthroughs to societal advancements, these trailblazers have paved the way for future generations, challenging stereotypes and breaking barriers along the journey. In the spirit of this year's International Women’s Day theme, "Inspire Inclusion," let's not only celebrate these women's contributions but also reflect on how we can foster a culture of inclusion within our workplace at SERE Motors. With female Sales Executives, Office Staff, Service Department members, and women in management, our organisation embodies the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Dorothée Pullinger: Pioneering Engineering and Entrepreneurship 

Dorothée Pullinger's legacy at Galloway Motors in the 1920s serves as a beacon of inspiration for women in the automotive industry. She established an on-site engineering college offering women three-year apprenticeships (two years shorter than the male equivalent) and designed the first car specifically for women, equipped with gear levers inside, a raised driving position, extra storage, a lowered dashboard, a smaller steering wheel, and a rear-view mirror as standard. Dorothée shattered gender norms and championed inclusivity in a male-dominated field and her pioneering efforts broke barriers for women in engineering and automotive industries, leaving a legacy of innovation and inclusivity. 

Beatrice Shilling: Engineering Genius and War Hero  

Beatrice Shilling's contributions during World War II, including her invention of a crucial restrictor valve, demonstrate the invaluable role women play in times of crisis. In 1932, Beatrice graduated with honours in engineering from the University of Manchester, listed as "Mr" due to the absence of recognised female titles. By 1934, she had earned a Brooklands Gold Star, becoming the fastest female motorbike racer at the circuit with a lap speed of 106mph. During World War II, while working for the Royal Aircraft Establishment, she invented a restrictor valve crucial for RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes, preventing stalling during steep dives and saving numerous lives. Beatrice's remarkable achievements as an engineering genius, motorbike racer, and wartime hero exemplify her enduring legacy of innovation and bravery and her dedication to innovation and problem-solving inspires us to foster an environment where every voice is heard and valued.  

Minnie Palmer 

Minnie Palmer made history as the first woman in England to drive and own her own car. Born in America, Minnie shattered societal norms in 1897 by taking to the road, becoming a trailblazer 31 years before women achieved the right to vote. Her pioneering act challenged perceptions, demonstrating that behind the wheel, women were just as capable as men. Minnie's courage and determination marked a significant milestone on the journey towards social and political emancipation for women, inspiring generations to come. 

Dorothy Levitt: “Gloves, chocolate, and a revolver” 

Dorothy Levitt was known as "the fastest girl on earth" after breaking the world speed record for women during a thrilling speed trial at Blackpool in 1906, achieving an impressive speed of 91mph. Alongside her racing prowess, Dorothy became renowned for her practical advice to fellow female motorists and famously recommended carrying gloves, chocolate, and even a revolver in the drawer under the driver's seat, reflecting both her daring spirit and her concern for safety in the early days of motoring. Dorothy's achievements and pragmatic approach continue to inspire women in the motoring world and remind them that they deserve a seat at the automotive table.  

Margaret Wilcox 

Margaret, the inventor of the car heater, proposed a solution to the challenge of cold open-air driving as early as 1893. However, it wasn't until 1929 that her idea materialised in the Ford Model A, marking a turning point in her career as an inventor. Remarkably, this invention was the first of her ideas to be patented in her own name rather than her husband's, highlighting her individual contributions and achievements. This milestone not only underscored her individual contributions but also celebrated her ingenuity and determination in a male-dominated field. Margaret's legacy as a pioneering inventor continues to inspire innovation and progress in the automotive industry. 

Mary Anderson 

Mary Anderson tackled the challenge of clearing ice and rain from car windshields with her groundbreaking invention: windscreen wipers. Her design featured spring-loaded arms with rubber blades that effectively swept across the windscreen, however, car companies initially hesitated to adopt her invention, claiming it would distract drivers. Anderson's innovative solution eventually became standard equipment in automobiles, transforming driving conditions. Despite the widespread adoption and undeniable impact of her invention, Mary Anderson never received financial compensation for her pioneering contribution to automotive safety. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated industry. Nevertheless, Anderson's legacy endures as a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring impact of groundbreaking ideas. 

Bertha Benz 

Bertha Benz embarked on a daring adventure in 1888, defying conventions and expectations by setting off in her husband, Karl Benz's, car without permission, fuel, or a map. While Karl believed the vehicle wasn't ready for such a journey, Bertha had a different vision. As she embarked on her 106km journey, Bertha encountered numerous challenges, showcasing her resourcefulness and determination. When fuel ran low, she ingeniously purchased ligroin from a pharmacy to keep the car moving. Facing a blocked fuel line, Bertha fearlessly cleared it with her hat pin, ensuring the journey continued. However, Bertha's ingenuity didn't stop there. Recognising the need for improved braking mechanisms, she sought the assistance of a cobbler to cover the car's brake shoes in leather, effectively creating the world's first brake lining. Bertha's audacious journey and innovative solutions not only demonstrated the potential of her husband's invention but also paved the way for advancements in automotive technology. May her pioneering spirit and determination continue to inspire generations of inventors and adventurers. 

These remarkable women's stories, along with the stories and experiences from the wonderful women in our lives, serve as powerful reminders that gender should never limit one's ability to pursue passions and ambitions. Their journeys exemplify the importance of inclusivity, where everyone, regardless of gender, is encouraged and empowered to chase their dreams and make significant contributions to society. In embracing inclusivity, we recognise and celebrate the diverse talents and perspectives that everyone brings, fostering a world where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive and succeed. In May our SERE Motors staff are due to race in the Belfast Marathon in 6 different relay teams. In the marathon relay, teamwork is the cornerstone of success, where individuals come together to achieve a common goal. Regardless of gender, our teams support each other, drawing strength from their diverse talents and perspectives. Men and women complement each other's strengths in the marathon relay, forming cohesive teams that excel through collaboration and mutual support. Whether it's providing encouragement during challenging moments, strategizing for optimal performance, or celebrating victories together, the marathon relay showcases the power of unity and cooperation across genders. As teammates work hand in hand towards a shared objective, they break down barriers and demonstrate that gender is not a limitation but rather a source of strength. Through their collective effort and camaraderie, SERE Motors staff in the marathon relay exemplify the boundless possibilities that emerge when individuals come together in pursuit of a common aspiration.
