Should you choose a manual or an automatic car?

Ahhh, the manual or automatic debate. A debate that created a hill that people will die on. If you’re on the hunt for your next car, this is one of the first questions you’ll want to figure out. While modern cars are packed with tech, the way your car changes gear is still a major factor when it comes to driving experience. 

So, what is best for your lifestyle? We’ve put together a guide on the advantages and disadvantages of each to help steer you in the right direction (pun intended, lol).

Let’s break it down. 

A manual car is the traditional kind where you operate the gears yourself using a clutch pedal and gear stick. Most cars on the road in the UK are manual. 

An automatic car does the gear-changing for you, so there’s no clutch pedal, just a simple gear selector – usually Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive – and off you go. Automatic cars are becoming increasingly more popular in the UK.

Should you go automatic?

Automatic cars have come a long way in recent years, especially with the rise of hybrids and EVs. Here’s why many drivers are making the switch: 

Advantages

  • Driving ease: No clutch, no gear stick, no stalling. Perfect if you’re new to driving, stuck in city traffic or just want less stress on the road. 
  • Smoother: Automatics change gear seamlessly, giving you a comfier, jerk-free journey. 
  • Great for stop-start traffic: If you’re crawling through Belfast or Lisburn at rush hour, not having to juggle clutch control is a blessing. 

Disadvantages 

  • Higher price tag: Automatics are usually pricier to buy and sometimes cost more to maintain and insure.  
  • Less ‘fun’ for some drivers: If you love being in control or enjoy a more engaged driving experience, automatics might feel a bit… boring.  

Is manual still worth it? 

Manual cars might feel a bit old school to some, but they still have their fans, and for good reason!  

Advantages 

  • Control: Ideal for winter driving or tricky terrain when you want to control exactly how the car responds. 
  • Cheaper to maintain: Fewer moving parts means fewer things that can go wrong (apart from the clutch – when it goes, you’ll know all about it). 
  • Often quicker off the mark: Manuals can offer better acceleration and responsiveness, especially in older cars. 

Disadvantages 

  • Harder work in traffic: Constant gear changes and clutch-pumping isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. 
  • Tougher to learn: Learning to drive a manual takes a bit more patience and coordination (but we think it’s worth it). 
  • One hand off the wheel: Changing gear means less time with both hands on the wheel – automatics win out for simplicity and safety here. 

It used to be true that manuals were more fuel-efficient, but these days it’s more of a draw. Modern automatics are far more economical than they once were – and in many cases, actually outperform manuals in MPG, especially in hybrids and electric vehicles. 

It's absolutely easier to learn in an automatic. There’s no clutch to worry about, no gears to master, and you’re far less likely to stall. You can focus on the road, not the gearbox. That said, if you pass your test in an automatic, you’ll only be licensed to drive automatics. Want to drive a manual later? You’ll need to re-sit your test. 

Manuals can be slightly cheaper to insure – mostly because the cars themselves tend to be cheaper and repairs are more straightforward. However, the difference in premiums is usually small. What can bump up the cost is if you’re on an automatic-only licence, as insurers see that as a higher risk. 

Heading overseas? In the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, automatics are the norm – and often cheaper to hire. In Europe and the UK, manuals are more common (and cheaper to hire). So, if you’ve only got an automatic licence, make sure to double-check your hire options before you fly. 

Kind of, yeah. With the UK pushing ahead to phase out new petrol and diesel car sales by 2035 (and EVs taking over), the manual gearbox is on borrowed time. Most electric cars don’t need a gearbox at all, so they’re all automatic. 

Almost every car brand is dropping manuals, and you’ll now find auto options in everyday models like the SEAT Ibiza or KGM Torres. 

So… which is better? 

It really depends on your driving style and priorities. 

  • If you’re all about convenience, comfort, and city driving, go automatic. 
  • If you’re after control, performance, or just prefer the traditional feel, manual might be your match. 

Either way, there’s no wrong answer – just what suits you best.
