Oil

Checking your oil regularly makes a real difference, especially before a long drive in warm weather. Your engine oil keeps everything running smoothly, so it's worth knowing what to look out for. Signs your oil needs changing include:

  • A dark or dirty appearance
  • A gritty or sludgy texture
  • A burnt smell
  • Consistent low oil levels, which could point to a leak or excessive oil consumption
  • Oil that feels thick or difficult to check

If it's time for a change, make sure you use the recommended oil type for your engine. You can find this online or give our team a call.

Not sure how to check your oil? Here's how:

  1. Park on a level surface and switch off the engine
  2. Wait until the engine has cooled and open the bonnet
  3. Locate the dipstick, usually with a bright orange or yellow handle
  4. Pull it out fully and wipe it clean with a paper towel or a cloth
  5. Reinsert it fully into the tube
  6. Pull it out again and check the level against the min and max markings. If it's below the minimum, top it up

Regular oil checks help your engine run efficiently and reduce the risk of breakdowns, keeping your car reliable for longer.

Tyres

Your tyres affect safety, fuel efficiency, handling and legal compliance, so they're worth checking properly before a long drive. Look at tyre pressure, tread depth, and any signs of uneven wear or damage.

A simple way to check tread depth:

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. An easy way to check this at home is with a 20p coin. Insert it into the tread grooves. If you can't see the outer rim of the coin, your tread is fine. If you can see the rim, it's time for new tyres.

Battery

High temperatures can put extra strain on your battery. If you've noticed slow starting or dimming lights, it's worth having it tested before you rely on it for a long trip. Give us a call if you're unsure.

Brakes

Your brake pads, rotors and fluid levels all matter for safe driving. If you notice squealing, grinding, or a spongy pedal feel, get in touch with us straight away.

Belts & Hoses

Warm weather can speed up wear on belts and hoses. Check for cracking or fraying, and have anything showing signs of damage replaced. If your car needs bodywork or wear-related repairs sorting before a trip, our team at Bodytech in Carrickfergus can help.

Fluids

Coolant, power steering fluid and windscreen washer fluid all help keep your car running smoothly. It's a legal requirement to have washer fluid topped up, so don't let this one run dry.

Windscreen Wipers

Northern Irish summers still bring their share of showers. If your wipers are worn or leaving streaks after a hard winter, now's a good time to replace them.

Planning a road trip? Keep these in mind

  • Pack an emergency kit with a torch, jump leads, a first aid kit, water, and snacks
  • Bring a phone charger and a basic tool kit for peace of mind
  • Plan your route in advance so you know where fuel stops and rest areas are
  • Give your car a clean inside and out before you set off, it makes the journey more pleasant
  • Avoid overloading the car, as extra weight affects fuel efficiency and handling

A little preparation goes a long way toward a safer, smoother journey. And remember to look after yourself too. Stay hydrated, take regular breaks, and share the driving where you can.

If you're ever unsure about any part of your car's condition, our team at Belfast and Lisburn are happy to help, and Bodytech in Carrickfergus is on hand for any bodywork or collision repair needs.
