Well, the cold weather has officially caught up with us, so now is the time to get your car prepared for winter! Driving in winter conditions can be challenging, but with a little care, you can ensure your vehicle is ready for anything from icy roads to heavy rain, and everything in between. At SERE Motors, we want you to stay safe and comfortable throughout the winter [and other cold seasons], so here are some key tips to prepare your car for the cold ahead.

SEAT ALL-IN SERVICE PLAN

Check Your Tyres

Winter weather can bring slippy, icy, and wet roads, so having the right tyres is essential when it comes to staying safe whilst driving in these conditions. Winter tyres offer better traction and control than your usual tyres in cold temperatures and during snow or ice. Here’s our advice

  • Check Tyre Pressure: Cold weather can cause tyre pressure to drop, which can affect your car's handling. Make sure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended level.
  • Inspect Tread Depth: Ensure your tyres have enough tread to provide grip on the road. If your tyres are worn, it’s time to replace them to avoid slipping on icy surfaces. Use the 20p trick to check this.
20p Thread Depth Test
  1. Find a 20p Coin: Any 20p coin will do!
  2. Insert the Coin: Place the coin into the main grooves of your tyre tread.
  3. Check the Outer Band: If the raised outer band around the edge of the coin is completely obscured when inserted, your tread is above the legal limit.
  4. Repeat Across All Tyres: Perform this test on multiple grooves of each tyre to ensure even wear.

Check Your Battery

Winter weather can put a strain on your car’s battery, especially during early mornings when temperatures are at their lowest. If your battery is older than 3-5 years, it may struggle to hold a charge. Get it checked by a professional to make sure it’s in good condition.

Cold weather can put a strain on your car’s battery, especially early in the morning when temperatures are at their lowest (before the sun has attempted to come out). If your battery is older than 5 years, it may struggle to hold a charge. If you experience any of the following signs, you might want to book in with our Award Winning After Sales Team to ensure your battery is in good condition, or to replace it!

  • Your Car Struggles to Start
  • Loss of Power to Your Car’s Electrical Systems
  • The Battery Warning Light Comes On
  • Start-Stop Function Stops Working
  • Your Battery is More Than Five Years Old (if your car is up to date on servicing, you shouldn’t need to worry but call us if you are!)

Top Up Your Fluids

Cold weather can affect your vehicle’s fluid levels, so make sure you check and top up these important fluids before the winter hits. If you are unsure about anything, please give us a call:

  • Engine Oil: Cold weather can affect the performance of your engine oil, so consider switching to a thinner oil for the winter months. Refer to your car’s manual or consult with SERE Motors for advice on the right oil for your vehicle.
  • Antifreeze/Coolant: Prevent your engine from freezing with the correct antifreeze levels. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is generally recommended. Check your coolant levels regularly and ensure your reservoir is topped up before setting out on any journey.
  • Windscreen Washer Fluid: Visibility is key during winter. Replace your standard washer fluid with a winter-specific formula to prevent freezing and to help effectively clear ice and snow from your windscreen.

Inspect Your Brakes

Your brakes are your first line of defense in stopping quickly, especially on wet or icy roads. Have your brakes checked to ensure they’re in good condition. Don’t forget to also check brake pads and brake fluid levels.

Test Your Lights

With the shorter days and darker mornings and evenings, your car’s lights are essential for visibility. Check that all your headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are working properly. If any bulbs are out, replace them immediately.

Keep Your Windshield Clean

Winter weather can bring snow, salt, and dirt onto your windshield, which can obstruct your view and make driving dangerous. Regularly clean your windshield and replace worn wiper blades. Consider using winter wiper fluid to keep your windshield clear of ice and snow. You might also want to invest in winter wiper blades, which are designed to perform better in snow and freezing rain.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Winter driving can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared for any emergency situations. Pack an emergency kit in your car with the following essentials:

  • A blanket, gloves, and a wee hat to keep warm
  • A flashlight with extra batteries
  • Non-perishable snacks and water
  • Jumper cables
  • A first aid kit
  • An ice scraper (and snow brush if you are travelling in heavy snow)
  • A charger for your phone or a portable power bank

Protect Your Car’s Paint

Salt and dirt from the roads can cause damage to your car’s paint, especially during winter. Wash your car regularly to remove road salt, and consider applying a protective wax coating to help shield your paint from the elements.
