Spring Car Maintenance Checklist: Get Your Car Ready for Summer

Winter can be genuinely brutal on your car. Months of cold starts, salt-covered roads, frozen windscreens, and short stop-start journeys that all add up - and by the time spring rolls around, your car has been quietly dealing with more stress than you might realise. 

Giving your car a proper spring health check is about making sure everything under the bonnet, and underneath the car, is working as it should be before the summer driving season gets underway.

Your tyres are the only part of your car that actually touches the road. Everything - braking, steering, cornering - depends on them being in good condition. After a winter of cold temperatures and wet roads, spring is the ideal time for a thorough tyre inspection.

TYRE PRESSURE

Tyre pressure drops by roughly 1 PSI for every 5.5°C drop in temperature - so if you haven't checked yours in a while, there's a good chance they're underinflated. Check all four tyres (plus your spare if you have one) against the recommended pressures in your vehicle handbook or the sticker inside your driver's door frame.

Underinflated tyres increase fuel consumption, cause uneven wear, and reduce your braking ability. Overinflated tyres reduce grip and make your ride harsh. Neither is safe.

TREAD DEPTH

The legal minimum tread depth in the UK and Northern Ireland is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. In practice, most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres at 3mm as stopping distances increase significantly below this.

• Use a 20p coin: if the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted into the tread groove, your tyre may be below the legal limit
• Check across the full width and around the circumference of the tyre — wear is often uneven
• Look for cracking, bulges, or cuts in the sidewall — if you find any, get the tyre inspected professionally

WHEEL ALIGNMENT

Winter potholes (and Northern Ireland has plenty) are notorious for knocking wheels out of alignment. If your car pulls to one side, your steering wheel sits off-centre when driving straight, or you've noticed unusual tyre wear, a wheel alignment check is worth booking in.

Cold, wet, and salty winter roads put significant strain on your braking system. Brake discs are particularly prone to surface rust after periods of sitting unused or after prolonged cold weather - most of this clears after normal driving, but it's worth paying attention.

WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR

• Squealing or grinding sounds when braking
• A pulsing or vibrating sensation through the brake pedal
• The car pulling to one side when you brake
• A longer stopping distance than usual
• The brake warning light appearing on your dashboard

If you notice any of these, don't wait. Book a brake inspection as soon as possible. Brake pads typically need replacing every 25,000–65,000 miles depending on driving style and conditions — but winter driving can accelerate wear considerably.

BRAKE FLUID

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and reduces braking effectiveness. Most manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every two years. Check the reservoir under the bonnet — the fluid should be between the MIN and MAX markers and should be a light amber colour. Dark or murky fluid is a sign it needs changing.

Fluids are cheap. Engine damage isn't. A few minutes checking your fluid levels could save you a very expensive repair bill.

ENGINE OIL

Engine oil lubricates moving parts, reduces heat, and prevents premature wear. Check the level using the dipstick when the engine is cold and on level ground:

• Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then pull it out again
• The oil level should be between the MIN and MAX markers
• The oil should be a clear amber colour - very dark or gritty oil is a sign it needs changing
• If you're topping up regularly, there may be an underlying issue worth investigating

Check your vehicle handbook for the correct oil specification - using the wrong grade can cause damage. If your car is due an oil and filter change, book it in at SERE Motors.

POWER STEERING FLUID

If your power steering feels heavy or you hear a whining noise when turning, low power steering fluid may be the cause. Check the reservoir (usually near the engine bay) and top up if needed with the manufacturer-recommended fluid.

COOLANT

Coolant (antifreeze) prevents your engine overheating in summer and freezing in winter. Check the level in the coolant reservoir (never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot). The fluid should be between the MIN and MAX markers and should be a vibrant colour - green, blue, pink, or orange depending on the type. Colourless or rusty-looking coolant should be replaced.

WINDSCREEN WASHER FLUID

Don't underestimate this one. Spring brings mud, pollen, and insects — and you'll burn through washer fluid fast. Make sure the reservoir is topped up and use a proper screen wash concentrate rather than plain water, which can harbour bacteria and won't cut through road grime effectively.

Car batteries typically last three to five years, but cold weather puts them under enormous strain — a battery that was struggling in October may not have survived the winter. Spring is one of the most common times for battery failure.

SIGNS YOUR BATTERY MAY NEED REPLACING

• Slow or sluggish engine cranking when starting
• Dashboard warning light for the battery
• Electrical components (lights, radio, windows) behaving erratically
• Needing a jump start
• The battery is more than 3–4 years old

Most garages can test your battery's health quickly and cheaply — often for free as part of a service check. If the battery is on its way out, replacing it before it fails completely is always far less stressful than being stranded.

It's easy to miss a blown bulb — especially if it fails gradually rather than all at once. Walk around your car with the lights on and check every bulb:

• Headlights (dipped and full beam)
• Sidelights / daytime running lights
• Brake lights (ask someone to help, or reverse close to a reflective surface)
• Indicators front, rear, and side
• Reversing lights
• Fog lights
• Number plate lights

While you're at it, check that your headlights are correctly aimed. Dirty or oxidised headlight covers can also significantly reduce output — plastic lens restoration kits are inexpensive and make a real difference.

Wiper blades are consumables - they typically need replacing every six to twelve months, and a winter of heavy rain, frost, and ice takes a toll. If your wipers are streaking, juddering, or leaving patches of water on the screen, replace them.

WINDSCREEN

• Inspect for chips and cracks — even small chips can spread and fail an MOT
• Most chips can be repaired quickly and cheaply if caught early
• Clean the inside of the windscreen thoroughly — interior haze and fingerprints are a serious visibility hazard and easy to miss
• Use a dedicated glass cleaner rather than an all-purpose interior cleaner

WIPER BLADES

• Lift the blades and inspect the rubber edge for splits or tears
• Run your finger along the edge — it should be smooth and firm
• Replace in pairs for even performance
• New wiper blades are inexpensive and make an immediate difference. Ask about wiper blade replacement at your next SERE Motors service.

Most drivers only realise their air conditioning isn't working when they first try to use it on a warm day in May - by which point every garage in the country has a waiting list. Get ahead of the queue and check it now.

HOW TO TEST YOUR AIR CON

• Switch it on and set to maximum cold
• It should start blowing cold air within 30–60 seconds
• If it blows cool but not cold, or takes a long time to cool down, it may need regassing
• A musty or unpleasant smell from the vents could indicate mould in the system — an air con service or antibacterial treatment can fix this

AIR CON RE-GAS

Air conditioning systems lose refrigerant over time — typically around 10–15% per year. Most cars need regassing every two to three years. It's a quick and affordable job, and makes a significant difference in hot weather.

The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your ventilation system - it filters out dust, pollen, pollution, and other particles. A blocked filter reduces airflow, makes your air con less effective, and can make the interior smell musty.

Spring, with its high pollen counts, is exactly the wrong time to have a dirty cabin filter. Most manufacturers recommend replacing it every 12,000–15,000 miles or every year. It's a quick, inexpensive job - and if you're a hay fever sufferer, it can make a real difference.

Road salt is corrosive. If it's been sitting on your paintwork, sills, or underside all winter, spring cleaning goes beyond aesthetics - it's about preventing long-term rust damage.

WHAT TO CHECK

• Inspect paintwork for chips, scratches, and stone damage — left unprotected, these can rust
• Check the sills, arches, and underside for rust bubbling under the paint
• Look at door and boot seals — cracked or torn rubber lets in water and road noise
• Inspect the windscreen and windows for chips 

WAXING & PAINT PROTECTION

Once the car is clean, a coat of wax or paint sealant provides a barrier against UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and summer bugs - all of which are more damaging than most drivers realise. Even a spray wax applied after washing makes a noticeable difference.

While you're giving your car a spring health check, take five minutes to make sure your paperwork is in order too:

• MOT — check the expiry date on your certificate. If it's due in the next couple of months, book it now before schedules fill up
• Car insurance — review your policy when it's due for renewal. Shop around rather than auto-renewing
• Vehicle tax — check your tax is up to date at www.nidirect.gov.uk
• Service history — make sure your service book or digital record is up to date
