What to Look for in Your First Car

When you’re new to driving, the “dream car” can wait. For now, you want something reliable, safe, and sensible on running costs. Smaller hatchbacks are popular choices for first-time drivers because they’re usually cheaper to insure, more fuel-efficient, and easier to handle when parking or doing tight turns.

A few key things to keep in mind:

Mileage

Lower mileage usually means the car has had less wear and tear, but don’t dismiss a car just because it’s a bit higher on the clock. A well-serviced car with 60,000 miles could be a safer bet than a poorly maintained one with 20,000. Mileage gives you context, but the service record tells the real story.

Fuel Economy

“Good fuel economy” means the car doesn’t guzzle petrol or diesel every time you leave the driveway. Cars that do 45–60 miles per gallon (mpg) are generally considered economical. For new drivers who often have a lot of short trips and errands, this means less time at the petrol station and more money in your pocket.

Service History

This is a big one. A full or partial service history shows how well the car has been looked after. Regular oil changes, MOTs, and manufacturer services are a green flag. Gaps or missing records? That could mean costly surprises later.

Safety Features

Airbags, ABS brakes, stability control, and decent crash-test ratings are non-negotiables. You want peace of mind knowing your first car is built to protect you.

Car Payment Options Explained

Buying a car is exciting, but let’s be honest: paying for it is where the reality check kicks in. Luckily, there are a few different ways to finance your first set of wheels:

Hire Purchase (HP)

This is straightforward - you pay a deposit and then monthly instalments. At the end of the agreement, once that final payment is made, the car is yours outright.

This often comes with lower monthly payments than HP, which can be easier when you’re just starting out. At the end, you can either hand the car back, part-exchange it for a new one, or pay a final “balloon” payment if you want to keep it.

Personal Loan or Cash

If you’ve saved up or can get a loan with a good interest rate, this option means you own the car from day one. It’s commitment-free, but it does mean having the money upfront.

Whichever route you choose, remember the car itself isn’t the only cost. You’ll also need to budget for insurance, road tax, fuel, maintenance, and MOTs. Your “affordable car” might not feel so affordable if you forget those extras.

Insurance Basics

Insurance is usually the biggest shock for new drivers, and it can cost more than the car itself. Here’s what you need to know:

Black Box Policies

A small telematics device is fitted to your car to track how you drive. The safer you are, the cheaper your premiums can get over time. It’s like having a driving coach quietly cheering you on.

Extras

Breakdown cover, windscreen repair, and courtesy car options may seem like add-ons, but they can save a lot of stress later.

Comprehensive vs. Third-Party

Third-party is the legal minimum and can be cheaper, but it only covers damage to other people’s vehicles. Comprehensive covers you too, and often it’s not much more expensive, so it’s worth comparing.

Insurance companies base their quotes on risk your age, your driving experience, and the car you choose. Smaller, lower-powered cars are usually cheaper to insure, which is another reason hatchbacks make sense for beginners. Fitting your car with a dashcam can also bring the price of insurance down slightly.

Nice-to-Have Accessories

A few extras can make driving more convenient and keep you safe:

  • Sat Nav or smartphone mount: Because balancing your phone on your knee is not a good idea.
  • Dash cam: Handy for safety and as evidence if you’re ever involved in an accident.
  • Seat covers and boot organisers: Keep things tidy and protect your car’s resale value.
  • Emergency kit: Think jumper cables, a first-aid kit, a high-vis jacket, and maybe even a torch (we also recommend learning to change a wheel and how to use a puncture repair kit).

These small investments can make life on the road much smoother.

Tips for New Drivers

  • Take your time when shopping: Test-drive different cars to see what feels right. Don’t just pick the first one that looks good in photos.
  • Think beyond the price tag: A cheap car with sky-high insurance and poor fuel economy won’t save you money in the long run.
  • Protect your record: Safe, careful driving now will reward you with lower insurance later.
  • Stay organised: Keep MOT certificates, insurance documents, and service history in one folder so you never scramble for paperwork.
  • Ask for advice: Dealerships like SERE Motors specialise in guiding new drivers; from finding the right first car to sorting payment plans and explaining insurance, having an expert in your corner makes things far less stressful.
