Summer is usually a busy time for drivers, whether you’re going on a long road trip, dropping the kids off to different summer activities, or continuing with the daily commute. However, with the rising temperatures your car may present with some problems that you’re not too used with - whether that’s how to keep you and your passengers cool on the road, or how to prevent your engine from overheating on those longer journeys in the sun. This blog explores the top car issues that are most likely in the summer, with practical tips on how to avoid them so you can have peace of mind on the road.

Air Conditioning

Before summer begins, car owners should have their air conditioning inspected as driving in the heat without a fully-functioning AC can be unbearable.

If your AC is blowing out warm air, or only works intermittently, an AC recharge can bring back cold air for those summer drives. This can also improve your fuel efficiency as there is less strain on the system and engine.

The recharge process involves removing any old refrigerant gas and oil from your AC system and replacing this with new refrigerant and lubricant, in line with the manufacturers recommendations. Further checks are completed to ensure there is no damage to the system which could cause the gas to leak.

Overheating Engine

One of the most common car problems that is more likely in the summer is an overheating engine. To prevent this from happening, you should ensure that your vehicle's engine cooling system is in top condition and follow these steps:

  • Regular checks of your coolant and engine oil levels
  • Park your car in the shade where possible
  • Use sunshades on your windscreen
  • Be aware of the temperature gauge
  • Increase air flow when driving by lowering the windows slightly or using the floor vents

Battery Issues

Summer heat is tough on car batteries and accelerate the onset of battery failure resulting in many motorists getting stuck on the roadside in the summer.

To avoid being one of these unlucky motorists this summer, car owners should be proactive about servicing and replacing their car's battery. Car batteries typically last 3-5 years, and inspections should be part of your car's routine maintenance, but it's especially important to look at it before taking off on a longer journey.

To limit heat damage to your car battery you should:

  • Drive your car regularly to ensure it doesn't discharge
  • Park in the shade or in a garage where possible
  • Avoid using the battery to run lights, radio, or accessories whilst turned off
  • Keep the battery terminals clean and free of corrosion

Sun Damage

We’ve all seen sun damaged cars on the road - particularly red cars which have faded to pink. To protect your car from fading, you should regularly wash your vehicle and wax it throughout the summer. Waxing creates a protective barrier against the harmful UV rays, preventing paint from fading and sun damage. Think of it as sun cream for your car. You should also look out for chips on your windscreen as the combination of direct sunlight and high temperatures can turn these into cracks.

Parking in the shade, or using a car cover when your vehicle is not in use, can help to shield it from the sun. This is especially important if you are leaving your car at home for a couple of weeks while you go away on holiday.

As well as damaging vehicle exteriors, the sun can cause damage to the interior of your car. From causing dashboard cracks, and damaging electronics, to fading the upholstery. Best practice to prevent these outcomes are to use sunshades or invest in UV-protective window tints to help shield your car’s interior from the sun.

Tyre Blowouts

Hot weather increases the air pressure in your vehicles tyres which puts more stain on any weak areas and increases the risk of a puncture.

This summer check your car's tyre pressure more regularly and especially before setting off on a long journey. To find out the recommended tyre pressure for your vehicle, check out the manufacturer's recommendations and make sure to inspect the tread for any signs of wear and tear.

Overworked Transmission

Towing trailers or driving up steep inclines in hot weather can put extra stress on your transmission. If you are planning on towing or driving in more challenging conditions in the hotter weather, make sure to service your transmission and check that the fluid levels are adequate.

You can avoid each of these common car problems this summer by being proactive and taking care of your car’s maintenance before the hot summer weather begins, so that you can drive with confidence and peace of mind this summer. Regular inspections, proper AC system maintenance, and protection from the sun will ensure that your car stays in good condition for your summer road trips.
