20 October 2025

It’s Tyre Safety Month, and there’s no better time to make sure your tyres are in tip-top condition. At SERE Motors, your safety is our priority, which is why we’ve put together a quick guide showing you how to check your tyres in just a few minutes.

THREE SIMPLE TYRE CHECKS YOU CAN DO IN UNDER A MINUTE

Want to stay safe on the road? Here are three quick checks you can do before you drive:

tyre pressure

PRESSURE

Check your tyre pressure regularly. Use a pressure gauge or look out for the dashboard warning light. Incorrect tyre pressure affects fuel efficiency, handling, and safety.

tyre condition

CONDITION

Inspect the tyre walls for cracks, bulges, or cuts. Damaged tyres are a common cause of blowouts, so if you see anything unusual, get them checked immediately.

TREAD DEPTH

A quick and easy way to check tread is the “20p trick” (you’ll see this in our video). Just pop a 20p coin into the tread grooves — if the outer band is visible, your tyre is below the legal limit and needs replacing.

Regularly checking these can save you money, and more importantly, keep you and your passengers safe.

CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURE THE RIGHT WAY

Many drivers unknowingly drive with the wrong tyre pressure. Here’s how to make sure yours is correct:

  1. Look for the tyre pressure sticker inside your driver’s door frame or fuel cap.
  2. Check the recommended PSI/bar values for your front and rear tyres.
  3. Use an air machine to inflate tyres to the correct pressure.

Remember, overinflated or underinflated tyres reduce safety, increase wear, and hurt fuel efficiency. Take a minute to check yours today!

TYRE CONDITION - WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Tyres wear down naturally, but certain signs indicate they need immediate attention:

CRACKS OR SPLITS

Often a sign of age or damage.

BULGES

Usually caused by impact damage and can be dangerous.

UNEVEN WEAR

Often a result of alignment or suspension issues.

If you spot any of these issues, it's time to get your tyres inspected at our Belfast or Lisburn Service Centres.

THE 20P COIN TRICK

You don’t need any fancy tools to check your tyre tread. The 20p coin trick is simple and effective:

  • Insert a 20p coin into the tyre tread groove.
  • If the outer band is visible, your tyre is below the legal limit of 1.6mm.
  • Compare worn tyres with safe ones to see the difference visually.

Keeping your tyres above the legal limit isn’t just about avoiding fines — it’s about staying safe on the road.
