The Key Tyre Checks You Need to Make
There are three essential areas you should regularly check to keep your tyres road-ready:
- Tread Depth The minimum legal tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, however, most experts recommend replacing tyres before they hit this limit, ideally at around 3mm. Use a tread depth gauge to check, or if you're in a pinch, try the 20p test: insert a 20p coin into the tread, and if you can see the outer rim of the coin, it’s time for new tyres.
- Tyre Pressure Keeping your tyres inflated to the correct pressure is vital for both performance and safety. Tyres with low pressure can cause poor fuel efficiency and uneven wear, while over-inflated tyres might reduce your vehicle's grip on the road. Most vehicles have the correct tyre pressures listed in the owner’s manual or on the inside of the driver’s door. Regularly check pressures, especially before long journeys.
- Tyre Condition Look out for any cuts, cracks, or bulges in your tyres. These could be signs of damage that might lead to a blowout. Uneven wear can also indicate issues like wheel alignment or suspension problems. If you notice anything unusual, it's best to get it checked by a professional as soon as possible... Preparing for Winter Driving
As we approach winter, it's worth considering winter tyres or at least making sure your current set is winter-ready. Winter tyres are designed with deeper tread and a softer rubber compound, which gives better grip in cold temperatures and improves stopping distances on wet or icy roads. Even in relatively mild winter weather, the extra safety can make a big difference!
