What Is a Timing Belt?
A timing belt (sometimes called a cambelt) is a crucial rubber belt inside your engine. Its job is to sync the crankshaft and the camshaft - two vital components that control the pistons and valves. Basically, it ensures that everything in your engine moves in harmony. Without it, the engine would be an expensive pile of chaos (that doesn’t work).
What Does It Actually Do?
The timing belt makes sure that the engine’s valves open and close at exactly the right moment in relation to the pistons. It keeps everything in time, hence the name. When it’s doing its job, your car runs smoothly and efficiently.
But if the timing belt fails? Good luck getting anywhere. Valves can crash into pistons, parts bend or break, and your engine could be severely damaged, often beyond economical repair.
Why Is It Important?
Think of the timing belt like the conductor of an orchestra. If it slips, snaps or wears out, the performance (your engine) turns into a very costly disaster. Some engines are what's called “interference engines,” which means a snapped timing belt can cause major internal damage - think new engine levels of damage.

When Should You Replace It?
Unlike your oil or tyres, your timing belt won’t show obvious signs it’s on the way out, until it suddenly is. That’s why most manufacturers set specific mileage or time intervals for replacing it. These vary depending on your make and model, but common intervals are between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 5 to 7 years, whichever comes first.
