When should you replace your window wipers?

Top Tips

They’re one of the cheapest, easiest car parts to replace – and one of the most important for your safety – yet many drivers don’t think about their windscreen wipers until they’re practically smearing more than they’re clearing – or the garage is telling them they need it replaced.

Here’s the truth: good wipers are essential all year round, not just when it’s raining sideways on the M1. They help keep your windscreen clear from rain, sleet, snow, dirt, and even bugs, ensuring you can see the road ahead clearly. Poor visibility is a major cause of accidents, so ignoring worn wipers isn’t worth the risk.

How long do window wipers last?

On average, most wiper blades last 6–12 months. The lifespan depends on how often you use them and the kind of conditions they face. If your car spends its days outdoors, UV rays, heat, ice, and grit can all wear down the rubber more quickly.

Signs It’s Time for New Wipers

You don’t need a mechanic’s eye to know when your blades are past their best. Look out for:

  • Streaking or Smearing – If your wipers leave lines, patches, or hazy marks on the glass, the rubber may be cracked or worn.
  • Juddering or Skipping – Wipers that stutter across the glass instead of moving smoothly often have hardened or misshapen edges.
  • Squeaking – A squeaky pass could mean the rubber is dry or damaged.
  • Visible Damage – Cracks, splits, or chunks missing from the blade are a dead giveaway.

If you’re getting more smudge than clarity, it’s time to make the swap.

How to Make Them Last Longer

A little TLC can stretch your wipers’ lifespan:

  • Clean them regularly – Wipe the rubber edge with a damp cloth to remove grit.
  • Defrost before wiping – Use your heater or an ice scraper rather than dragging frozen blades across the glass.
  • Park in the shade – When possible, avoid baking the rubber in direct sunlight.

Why You Shouldn’t Put It Off

Worn wipers aren’t just irritating – they’re dangerous. Poor clearing can make it harder to see hazards, especially in heavy rain or snow. In winter, damaged blades can also struggle to remove frost or slush effectively, forcing you to lean on the demister and waste time.

If your wipers are leaving streaks, squeaking like an old door, or skipping across the windscreen, don’t wait for a downpour to find out just how bad they are. A fresh pair is inexpensive, easy to fit, and makes a huge difference to your driving safety.

At SERE Motors, we can replace your wipers quickly while you wait – so you can drive away with a clear view, whatever the weather throws at you.
