Yes. If you can charge at home, a used PHEV delivers the best of both worlds. Most daily commutes in NI are well within the electric-only range of a PHEV, meaning you can run almost entirely on electricity while retaining full petrol range for longer journeys.
No. Self-charging (HEV) hybrids generate their own electricity through regenerative braking and the engine. There is nothing to plug in, you simply fill up with petrol as normal and benefit from significantly improved fuel economy.
Generally yes. Self-charging hybrids typically achieve 45–60+ MPG compared to 35–45 MPG for equivalent petrol models. PHEVs that are regularly charged can achieve even lower running costs, with many owners covering the majority of their miles on electricity alone.
No, it's essentially the same as driving any standard automatic vehicle. The only difference is the seamless switching between the petrol engine and electric motor. Top tip: accelerate gently and brake early to recharge the battery (regenerative braking).
Hybrid vehicles are not designed to drive on battery power alone, so in the instance that it runs out of fuel, it will briefly switch to its electric battery to safely pull over. It will disable itself to protect its hybrid components from severe mechanical damage.
