SsangYong Korando named best tow car for under £24,000
The new SsangYong Korando has been crowned the best tow car under £24,000 by Auto Express, winning the plaudits of testers with its stability at high speeds and tow capacity of 2,000kg - significantly more than the competition. Discover the special 5 Years 0% Finance offer available now - only at SERE.
With its advanced 4x4 system and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, the SsangYong Korando include everything you could possibly want in a tow car.
The engine produces a healthy 176bhp and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, and the 4x4 system operates in two driver-selectable modes to suit road or off-road conditions. The SsangYong Korando also offers the option for the differential to be locked if you get into a sticky situation.
This combination gives the Korando a 2,000kg max braked tow capacity on both the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic models.
Auto Express was also impressed with the performance of the Korando. They timed a 30-60mph acceleration test while towing a 1,554kg caravan. It took the Korando 12.7 seconds to complete the dash, a fast time by any reckoning.
The Korando doesn’t compromise on everyday practicality either. It’s got a 486-litre boot (1,312-litres with the rear seats down) and all models have ISOFIX fittings to the outer rear seats for safe child seat mounting. Five doors make access easy and there’s abundant space in the cab with enough room for a family of five.
Choosing the right tow car
What makes a great tow car?
For starters, it can’t be a pick-up. That’s another class altogether.
It’s got to be a car. You know, a vehicle with a boot. And of course, it’s got to be able to tow more than the weight of a regular car.
There are two types of tow capacity: unbraked and braked. Unbraked tow capacity is always lower than braked tow capacity. Unbraked is the rating for a trailer without its own brakes, and the maximum legal limit is 750kg. Braked tow capacity is the rating for a trailer with its own brakes, and the maximum legal limit is 3,500kg.
There is a common formula with the best towers: they always have 4x4 drive and a turbo-diesel engine. The limitless grip, steadfast stability and strong low-down torque of this combination means your car is up to the task of pulling your holiday home. 2WD cars can’t tow nearly as much and turbo-petrol engines more often than not have a lower tow capacity, and less torque, which may be problematic with today’s bigger caravans.
If you have less than £24,000 to spend, you can’t go wrong with the Korando.
A generous specification list ensures the Korando comes fully equipped with the latest mod-cons including cruise control, remote keyless entry and alloy wheels.
